Après ses études de médecine, Elisabeth Rushing a travaillé pendant un an comme médecin assistant en médecine interne à l’Hôpital universitaire Johns-Hopkins (Baltimore, MD, États-Unis) avant de suivre une formation de spécialiste en neurologie au Georgetown University Hospital (Washington, DC, États-Unis). Elle a ensuite suivi une formation en neuropathologie à l’Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (Washington, DC, États-Unis). Elle a ensuite été nommée professeur de pathologie (neuropathologie) à l’Université du Texas Southwestern Medical Center à Dallas, Texas. Son dernier poste aux États-Unis était celui de cheffe de la neuropathologie, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology et de professeur de neurologie à l’Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (Bethesda, Maryland) et professeur de pathologie, Georgetown University Hospital. En 2011-2021, elle a travaillé à l’Institut de neuropathologie, Hôpital universitaire de Zurich, puis pendant 3 mois en pathologie au Rikshospitalet, Oslo, Norvège.
